The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) of Texas has called the federal Carswell prison a “Hospital of Horrors.” For more than a decade, stories of tragedy and repression have continued to flow steadily from the facility like a festering open wound, from extreme medical abuse and toxic conditions to corruption and unwarranted political repression where prisoners are housed for punishment based on their ideas or affiliations rather than safety or health concerns.

The Campaign to Close Carswell is calling for an immediate closure of the facility’s “Administrative Unit” and greater scrutiny of the general conditions that women and transgender prisoners face.
